How to castrate calves, trust me its funner than it sounds.
1. To start the castration process first you have to have a young male calf usually under a year old (it doesn't really matter except its easier on them if you do it young)
2.Next you need to catch this calf and put it in a chute with a head gate so it can't move or kick very easily.
3.Put the calf in the chute than have someone hold the calves tail and bend it towards its head as hard and as far as you can (this dulls its pain by kinda paralyzing it)
4. Now kneel beside to chute and get a bucket with warm disinfected water, a scalpel, and these special pliers that have a blade and a crimper or something built in it.
5. Grab the calf's testicles and put the water on it to keep the fur out of the way
6. Then grab your scalpel and slice the skin under the testicles and do it once on both sides of the sack.
7. Now, squeeze the the testicles like your milking a cow (from the top to the bottom) and the two testicles should pop out.
8. put your scalple in the bucket with disinfected water and pick up your pliers and cut the vains that the testicals are connected to and crimp the vains to try and stop the bleeding (but it will still bleed a little so don't worry, but call the vet if it bleeds to much)
9. Then put the calf's tail down and then he will probably feel a little sting but he'll get over it...someday.
10. he might be a little sore for a while so don't push him to hard for a while.
11. Now, if your a dog this will be your favorite part, throw the balls to the dog and he will love them, or you can fry them up and have some prairie oysters.
If the calf doesn't stay still through all this or the momma cow starts to try and save her calf, just kick them in the face a couple times...that's what we do, its fun.
you enjoy doing this don't you
